Mission

To assist the Navy in the protection of the nation's maritime sovereignty; to conduct counter-narcotics, search and rescue, and fishery enforcement operations; and to enforce environmental protection standards.

Leadership

The Commander, Naval Forces is Captain Juan Santiago ESTRADA Garcia (0-6 equivalent) since February 2000. He has:

• Completed military studies in Canada, Cuba, Mexico, and Sweden
• Served as Chief of Staff for the Navy
• Had command and staff assignments in infantry units

Organization and Capabilities

The Nicaraguan Naval Infantry has 45 personnel divided between the Pacific and Caribbean coasts.

Weapons and Equipment

The Nicaraguan Naval Infantry is a light infantry force.
